After stopping by the store, I was able to pick up a few samples from Kiehl's, which totaled up to a whole skincare routine! Read through for my thoughts!

To me, Kiehl’s has always seemed like one of those staple brands that always does the job, and whenever you’re going through problematic skin, this is the brand you go back to.

Problem is, I’ve never tried Kiehl’s.

And to be totally honest, while I have my skin problems, I would never describe my skin as problematic. Nonetheless, the brand has always intrigued me and when I was at the mall (for the first time in ages) that actually had a Kiehl’s store, I figured I’d drop in and take a look around.

This led to a very nice saleswoman, a short skincare consultation, and most importantly, a few samples to take home with me.

I’ve had my eye on a few of the products so it was pretty exciting to take a few of them home to try before committing to a full size version. Armed with basically a whole skincare routine, I was able to collect my thoughts.

The cucumber herbal line is for all skin types, particularly dry or sensitive.

If you like lathering up your cleanser (because somehow that makes it seem like it works better) but don’t enjoy the drying/stripping feeling it leaves afterwards, this is a great choice for you. As someone with drier skin, foaming cleansers aren’t my thing but I’m a sucker for ones that don’t dry out my skin after.

This one is very gentle, lathers up nicely, and doesn’t strip your skin, so I can see why dry or sensitive skin types would love this. However, other than that, there’s nothing inherently special about this cleanser that would make me get a full size.

I actually had my eye on the Ultra Facial toner, but the saleswoman assured me that was for very dry skin types, and the cucumber herbal was amazing in its own right.

Now this toner has a watery consistency that worked best for me by tapping into the skin… a lot. I felt like my skincare routine just got a heck of a lot longer, and yet, at the same time, felt great in the fact that it absorbed the toner well.

Initially I wasn’t a huge fan of how tacky it left my skin feeling, but never is toner the last step in my routine, and the tackiness was replaced by the silky softness of my serum.

Side note: the toner is GREEN so even though it was just going on my face it makes me feel healthy 😁

Probably the most important step in any skincare routine, now comes the serum! I love the name, because “plump” is definitely how I want my skin to feel, and “re-texturizing” appeals to me as someone who has a bit of an issue with skin texture.

I don’t have a lot of experience with serums in general, but I always thought they were more on the liquid-y side, so I was surprised to see this one with a soft, gel-like consistency. It applies on the skin very smoothly and when my friend and I tried this out in the store, we were blown away how smooth it felt on our skin.

However, for me it’s more of an expensive moisturizing addition than anything else. While my skin feels hydrated and debatably “plump” after application, I can’t vouch for much else. Maybe because real texture and wrinkles aren’t a problem for me yet, or the fact that you need a much longer time to use this (although for a sample, it’s not bad).

Either way, I’m not impressed enough to spend the money on it, but I’d highly recommend getting your hands on a sample of this!

I’m super glad to have gotten a sample of this because I was debating about getting it, sure that I would like it. Now that I have tried it, I’m on the fence about whether I like it or not. There’s not anything I would say is totally bad about it, but I guess I just had different expectations on how I expected it to feel, etc. Do you ever feel that way about a product?

It says unscented, but it’s one of those where you expect literally no smell but there’s still a little something something there.

I expected a richer texture from this, but it’s more lightweight, so I can see why people with oily skin enjoy this too. Going from the Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Gel and belif Aqua Bomb, both of which don’t give my drier skin as much hydration as I would like, this feels extra moisturizing.

It leaves my skin feeling smooth, *almost* to the point of greasiness. If I touched my face with my fingers it felt slick, but I never thought as I was putting it on, “man, my face feels greasy.” That being said, it does take some time for it to sink into your face. Once it was totally absorbed, my face felt moisturized af.

Unfortunately, I think I like this more than the Ultra Facial Cream. “Unfortunately” because when I shop for moisturizers, I only need night ones rather than for during the day. Since this one contains sunscreen, it’s more suited for day use.

This has a thicker consistency than the Ultra Facial Cream, more creamy like and with an opaque white color similar to sunscreen. While it does have a faint sunscreen smell, it doesn’t linger or leave that pesky white cast on your face.

Like the Ultra Facial Cream, it also leaves my skin feeling smooth but unlike the original version, not greasy at all, which was a tad surprising with the sunscreen addition.

Have you tried anything from Kiehl’s?

  • Ohhh, I suddenly remembered why kiehls ultra facial cream sounded so familiar now – and it was because my sister used to use it! I was such a late bloomer when it came to taking care of my skin and just beauty in general, so I’d sometimes use hers (she’s younger than I am too, haha) and I’m not sure if I even felt a difference (pretty sure it’s because I identified as a boy back then and was an idiot when it came to skincare and never really washed or moisturized my face).

I used to use their avocado eye cream and I love that stuff, but unfortunately I always forget to use eye cream. I think I bought the small size twice, and both times I didn’t even get halfway through it before it went bad. Not kiehls fault at all though, I was just bad at using it consistently :p

I’ve heard their body butter is great though! Don’t remember what it’s called, but it comes in a yellow tub. Haven’t tried it either so I can’t say anything about it besides a lot of people seem to love it.

I was the same way, taking care of my skin only happened within the last few years. I remember one time I was at Skinfood asking a salesperson what I should get, and she asked me what I was already using on my skin. When I said, “uhh, nothing…?” she was like. appalled. I’m really into it now though.

It’s the Creme de Corps! I’ve heard everybody loving that too, but the problem is I have three bottles of lotion to get through (not to mention the mini travel sizes I also have) so I need to get through those first before I buy anything else. The Creme de Corps (was almost going to abbreviate that to CDC but better that I don’t, lol) sounds super *luxurious* though!

  • Oh this is a great post! I’ve tried their midnight recovery concentrate, which is a lovely lightweight facial oil, their avocado eye cream, which is moisturizing and gentle, and their dark spot solution, which was also a nice lightweight serum but didn’t do anything for my hyperpigmentation. I hear a lot about their calendula line so it’s nice to read reviews on the less-discussed cucumber line, thank you!

Thanks, Jenny, I’m glad you liked this! I hear a ton about their calendula line as well (& it reeeeeally makes me want to try their mask from that line) and I actually had no idea this cucumber one existed until I was in store. Which is funny because this line is actually the one target for my skin type!

  • Great post, thank you for sharing with us!
    Isn’t That Charming.

  • I’ve never tried Kiehls, but the sales lady was so nice to give you all those samples and great selection of them as well. The toner and face cream with spf really stood out to me from this review, which means.. shopping time! x

I know, I was actually surprised she gave me everything instead of just one or two. It made me excited to try them out when I got home!

  • I did go in once to try their eye cream but they weren’t great with giving samples. Although I did have some samples of the blue serum but I didn’t use it regularly. I think it’s surprising too how the ultra facial cream with spf felt less greasy, I wasn’t sure whether I would like that cream but I’ll bear it in mind if I need another SPF x

Sometimes I find it hard to use samples regularly, especially a few different ones at the same time, but I really wanted to write out this post, haha. But yes, I wasn’t sure I’d care much for the cream with spf either, but it was pleasantly surprising!

  • What a cool way to try out a whole skincare routine. I should ask for an entire routine’s worth of samples next time I go to the beauty counter! Do you know what the SPF rating was on the day moisturizer?

    Camilla || Gracefulface.com

    • Sam

      The SPF rating is 30!

  • I am trying to find a good night cream as well! I currently use argan oil, but I want to try out other options too just to see. It’s difficult to find ones that work well but don’t have SPF. I definitely should get some samples to try out because that toner sounds so nice! Also, please do an updated skincare routine post if you can!

The samples were so worth it. I’m still going through the serum & day moisturizer! I will definitely do an updated skincare routine, thanks for the idea 🙂

  • ahh the cucumber line sounds interesting and the ultra facial cream is something that I would love to try! Have you tried any of their Masque?
    xx, Kathy

    • Sam

No, I haven’t unfortunately! I do want to get their Rare Earth Deep Pore one, and maybe the Turmeric & Cranberry. I always hear great stuff about all of their masks though!

  • I’ve tried the cucumber herbal conditioning cleanser before and it was so amazing! I’ll have to try the ultra facial cream, sounds awesome!
    Thank you for sharing!
