A bit of a ramble on my perfume habits (aka nonexistent) and a simple question: how much do you spend on perfume? Just a friendly discussion!

A long time ago I wrote a post detailing my perfume collection, which was preeetttyy dang extensive for someone who does not wear perfume. Granted, all of them were great smelling gifts, but I’ve always considered it a “special occasion” thing to do. But special occasions are rare, as the name suggests, so hardly ever did I wear them.

Fast forward to now. I’ve condensed the collection quite a bit after some tossing here and there, and just like drinking water every day, I’ve forced it into my ritual. I figure a) I’ll smell good, and b) they won’t be sitting on my counter mocking me and making me feel bad that I’ve had them for years and used them once or twice.

And you know what? I realize that I like putting on perfume. Not that I didn’t before, but now that I’m wearing it all the time it kinda makes me feel cool and sophisticated. The act of spritzing on a floral scent (because basically all of my perfumes are floral based) with a cute, glass bottle is therapeutic in its own way.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’ve transformed into a perfume person – I still rely on scented lotion to get me scent-ready for the day. I’ve just… broadened my horizons. Appreciating the bottled scents I have now.

And that appreciation is turning into a window shopping spree for luxury scents, rather unfortunately, since I’d rather spend my money on skincare or clothes. But I figure, having a good few (got to give myself a little bit of variety) signature scents around makes me feel good.

Yeah, turns out nice perfumes are pricey. Even normal perfumes are not as cheap as I would think.

So, a question – or rather a few:

What’s your take on luxury perfumes?

Do you have them?

Hate them?

Can’t bear to spend the cash on them?

Does it make sense to invest in a perfume if you’re not a perfume person? This could really apply to any beauty / skincare product. I’ve always thought, “no, if I’m not a perfume person why spend the money on it?” which is still valid, yet because I do wear it sometimes, is it better that I do have something luxe and makes me feel good?

I would love to hear what you guys think, if I’m crazy or you sort of get it.

In the meantime, I’ve been over two scents in particular:

Malin + Goetz dark rum ($165, ouch) & Giorgio Armani Si ($92, eh, slightly better).

If you’ve tried these, let me know what you thought! Recommendations are also always welcome!

How much do you spend on perfume?

  • I used to have a big perfume collection as well, many of them gifts, but I’ve since narrowed it down to a few of my favorites, mainly Jo Malone ones. Even though they’re pricey I love spritzing them every morning, the scent always lifts up my mood! I think with perfume, and really any of my purchases, I always try to think about whether using them would bring me joy, and if yes, it’d be worth it for me 🙂

That’s a great philosophy to have! I’m definitely going to have to apply that with any future perfume purchase – if it was for any beauty purchase, I’d go broke, lol.

  • Ah, I wish I could be like that with perfumes! I’m like the past you in where I don’t wear perfume often because I forget lol. I have a lot of deluxe samples and I bought a mini size of roses de chloe and a rollerball of fresh lychee something (can’t remember haha). I rather like florals too, roses de chloe is my favorite!

I went to lush the other day and a sales associate introduced me to their lust scent and it smells JUST like jasmine! I love it cause my mom has these jasmine plants and they always smell so good. Unfortunately (maybe fortunately lol) I didn’t pick one up because, well, I don’t really wear perfume. But I could very well imagine that being my signature scent!

That being said, I do love luxury perfumes! They just seem to last a lot longer than the celebrity drugstore ones, though I had a small sample of lady gaga’s perfume and I lovedddd it. If it’s something for a special occasion then I’d only limit myself to one or two small bottles since it’ll take me a while to finish them up anyway.

I HAVE to try out that lush scent though, I wasn’t aware they had perfumes! I feel like ever since I’ve been open to the idea of picking up a new fragrance, I’m noticing all the expensive perfume lines comin’ out of the woodwork, haha. Maybe I should consider mini sizes, since they do take so long to finish up!

  • It’s good to invest on some perfumes that you really love.

  • I used to have a lot of perfumes but have since narrowed down to only two, Dior J’Adore for Spring and Summer and finally Angel by Theirry Mugler for Autumn and Winter. I did win a huge box of luxury perfumes early this year and won’t be needing any new ones for years!

Ooh, how nice! I’m definitely going to give the Dior and Theirry Mugler ones a look.

  • I love this post so much because it brings out a really big problem in my life- I don’t know why I’m able to spend on a dress 100 euros on a whim but when I see a 100 euro-bottle of perfume I go nuts! I love perfume, my most expensive one is Prada Candy, it’s the love of my life! I currently only buy perfume when I run out of it, especially because my beauty products money are spent on makeup!

I’m currently hosting a giveaway on my blog, hoping you can check it out,

Wow, haha! It’s a good habit though, only buying one until you run out!

  • I usually get them as gifts to be honest, I treated myself to a Jo Malone perfume in January as something to remember my trip to America by, thank you for sharing! Great post xxx

Same, I don’t think I’ve bought my own perfume, which I don’t know is good or bad, haha.

  • I used to buy so many perfumes but some how I figured that I only use few… So I got rid of many and now I stick with my favorite ones 🙂 x

    • Sam

At least you have your favorite ones to count on! 🙂

  • I spend next to nothing on perfume as it has always been one of those things I get gifted to me on Christmas and Birthdays!

Same! I should probably finish those up before buying my own, haha!

  • I’m a perfume addict so I can definitely relate here. My collection is way too big and I’m trying to use stuff up before buying any new ones! Loving your collection!

    Have an amazing day!

    • Sam

Thanks, Kris! I also have a few that are half-used, so it’s been a journey to finish all of them up!

  • I am not a perfume person at all but for some strange reason I find myself picking up a few bottles now and then.

    • Sam

Haha, same! It’s either the packaging or scent that reels me in, even though I hardly use them.

  • I’m definitely not a perfume person and have only ever bought luxury perfumes, not for myself, but as a gift to others. Though, I do own quite a bit of luxury perfumes because it somehow become a tradition for my mum, in particular, to give me a bottle of nice perfume for birthdays or christmases. I don’t wear them often, but more for when I go out to dinners with friends or special occasions like yourself and find it a struggle to finish the whole bottle. I love the scent of the Si but never tried the malin + goetz one… I didn’t even know they made perfumes. If you are looking for a few perfumes to try though, my favourite ones are Gucci Guilty, Hugo Boss Nuit (the black, original one, this is one is for sure my all time favourite) and Paco Rabanne 1 million and ultra violet x

Ooh, thanks for the recommendations! I’ll be sure to check them out!

And yeah, I had no idea Malin+Goetz had perfumes either until I was looking around their site, but apparently the dark rum one is a bestseller, haha.
